The Shastri Institute has been instrumental in building understanding, respect and goodwill between our two great countries for the last fifty years. The idea of an Institute to promote scholarly activity between India and Canada was first conceived by Michael Brecher, a Political Science Professor at McGill University. In 1966, Brecher informally broached the idea to the visiting Indian Finance Minister T. T. Krishnamachari who immediately replied that it was a “splendid idea.” In 1967 a joint announcement of the Government of Canada and the Government of India, gave birth to the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute.
Our broad based initiatives support the creation of bi-national links between academia, government, the business community and civil society organisations by funding research and hosting seminars. Our internship and fellowship programmes provide opportunities for individuals to gain first-hand experience in India or Canada. In addition, our Library programme provides valuable resources to students and faculty at our Member Institutions.
The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute became bi-national in 2005. It has the honour of being the only Institution which has One Hundred Fifty-Six(156) premier academic Institutions as its members in India (including IITs, IIMs, NITs, Law schools, Central and State Universities) and Thirty-Nine (39) universities in Canada (including McGill, Queen’s and York Universities). The Institute’s scope has expanded as well to include law, management, arts, information science, environment, science and technology including biotechnology along with humanities and social sciences.
