Established by the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) and the Royal Canadian Legion to create a Canadian scholarship that will ensure a lasting legacy for Veteran research in Canada by training a future generation of military, Veteran and family researchers. The scholarships will be awarded to doctoral (PhD) students who demonstrate excellence in their proposed research and exhibit significant potential for a high impact research career in a relevant area. Preference will be given to students studying at one of CIMVHR’s partner universities and to Canadian students
About Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR)
There is need for Canadian research that addresses health protection and care across the life course of those who serve Canada in demanding environments, as well as research related specifically to the transition from military to civilian life. There is also an increased awareness of the need to provide relevant research related to families of those who serve, and have served, Canada.

Aim and Benefits of Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) Royal Canadian Legion Doctoral Scholarship in Military and Veteran Health Research
- The student will receive funding for two years to fund their doctorate degree and research related to Veterans and their families
- $25,000 each year for two years to a doctoral student demonstrating excellence in a high impact research career relevant to military, Veteran and their families’ health.
Requirements for Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) Royal Canadian Legion Doctoral Scholarship in Military and Veteran Health Research Qualification
- Be registered with a Canadian university, as a full-time doctoral student, or as a student in a combined MA/PhD, fast track program.
- Be doing research that considers the unique context of military service over the life course and that is of potential importance to improving the physical, mental health, or well-being of Veteran or other populations and their families.
- Demonstrate a high level of quality in proposed research methodology, and excellent analytical and writing skills
- Exhibit potential for a high-impact research proposal in a relevant area
- Have received ethics clearance from for their research from their respective university and/or the Social Science Research Review Board (SSRRB) if applicable: SSRRB CIMVHR Statement
Interview date, Process and Venue for Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) Royal Canadian Legion Doctoral Scholarship in Military and Veteran Health Research
- The successful candidate must remain in good academic standing with their university.
- The successful candidate is expected to attend the Scholarships and Award Announcement at CIMVHR Forum 2024 in Winnipeg, to accept their scholarship from the funder.
- The successful candidate will meet with Veterans to ensure a better understanding of the impact of military and Veteran health research (facilitated by The Legion National Foundation)
- At mid-point (September 2025), the successful candidate shall complete the interim research progress report, together with their supervisor, to demonstrate that the research is feasible and remains aligned with the goals of the scholarship.
- Upon completion of the scholarship (September 2026), the successful candidate shall complete the final report, impact statement and lay summary together with their supervisor, which will be shared with Queen’s University Office of Advancement and the funder. Parts of the final report, impact statement and/or lay summary may be used in the CIMVHR annual report and on social media.
- In the final year of the scholarship (September 2026), the successful candidate shall submit an abstract proposal for peer review to present at the CIMVHR Forum. Note: submissions do not guarantee a presentation at Forum as abstracts are double blind peer reviewed to ensure high-quality and credibility.
- The successful candidate shall acknowledge CIMVHR and The Royal Canadian Legion as sources of funding in all presentations and publications related to the scholarship research.
- The successful candidate is encouraged to submit an article to the Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health (JMVFH) upon completion of the scholarship.
