In the spirit of James Robinson Johnston, who believed that the best interests of African Canadians would be served through education, Dalhousie University each year offers a renewable graduate-level scholarship to a promising African Canadian student, providing them the opportunity to pursue master’s or doctoral studies in their program of choice.

Aim and Benefits of Dalhousie University James Robinson Johnston Graduate Entrance Scholarship for African Canadians

The recipient of the scholarship will be awarded $15,000 per year for up to two years (master's) or $19,000 per year for up to three years (PhD


Requirements for Dalhousie University James Robinson Johnston Graduate Entrance Scholarship for African Canadians Qualification

  • You must be a self-identifying African Canadian citizen or permanent resident who has been accepted into or applied for a master’s or doctoral program.
  • Applications are particularly encouraged from students whose program of study has the potential to contribute to African Canadian community enhancement and advancement.
  • If you hold any other scholarships, the JRJ Graduate Entrance Scholarship will be considered a “top-up award” to your other sources of funding. The total amounts you receive will not exceed $20,000 per academic year for master’s programs and $30,000 per academic year for doctoral programs.
