This year, the Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies is celebrating its 36th anniversary.  In 36 years, the Awards count 223 alumni from all Atlantic Canada’s faculties of business.  The Award is open to undergraduate students of Business Studies in universities in the Atlantic Provinces.

The Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies began in 1989 to support the development of future business leaders and business programs in Atlantic Canadian universities.  36 years later, the Awards count 223 alumni from all of Atlantic Canada’s faculties of business.

Aim and Benefits of Frank H. Sobey Awards 2024 - 2024

This year’s Award Winners, 8 in total will each receive $45,000. In recognition of their achievements, all Finalists will each receive $3,500.  Award Winners will be announced in March, 2025.

Award Winners will be entitled to use the designation Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies Winner in their subsequent curriculum vitae, job resumés and references.

In addition to the financial Award, the Fund offers our Award Winners mentorship support. Award Winners will be carefully matched with volunteer mentors based on career experience and aspirations and who will provide guidance and advice to enhance academic success and assist in preparing for and transitioning successfully into the workforce. The mentors are members of the business community across Atlantic Canada.

Requirements for Frank H. Sobey Awards 2024 - 2024 Qualification

To be eligible for the Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies: 

• You must have completed at least one year of undergraduate business studies at an Atlantic province’s university
• The academic qualification for these Awards is a minimum overall average of B (or your university’s equivalent GPA) in your most recent year of full-time business studies at an Atlantic province’s university. The Fund will take into appropriate consideration information provided concerning entrepreneurial interests, employment history, extracurricular and community activities and career aspirations.
• Students who have previously been awarded the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies are not eligible to reapply.

Documents Required for Application

Together with your application, you must include:

Three letters of reference, sent directly to your Dean:

• A letter of reference from a professor under whom you have completed a university course or courses in business studies;
• A letter of reference from a previous employer or client or someone else affiliated with your past or current employment; and
• A letter of reference from someone who can attest to your skills and attributes, who is not a member of your family or a close relative.

These references will be forwarded by your Dean to the Fund Letters of Reference should focus on:

• how the referee knows the applicant
• duration of relationship with applicant
• the applicant’s position responsibilities, accomplishments/skills, contributions, motivation, attitude, reliability, and consistency

A recent head and shoulders photograph of yourself suitable for publication.
