The University of Alberta is a public research university located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was founded in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, its first president. Its enabling legislation is the Post-secondary Learning Act.

The Scholarship is open to residents of northern Alberta (as defined by the Northern Alberta Development Council), Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Awarded annually to a student registered full-time or part-time in a graduate degree program at the University of Alberta whose focus of enquiry is in the field of northern studies
